Pillowcase, probably German military issue, c.1942–1945
This blue and white checked cotton pillowcase is associated with the period of the family’s internment in Westerbork, Bergen-Belsen, Weingarten and Biberach, although its exact place and date of acquisition are unknown. The fabric and construction are consistent with institutional or military bedding used during the Second World War. A property stamp showing a German Army eagle within a square indicates official issue. The meaning of the letters ‘H.U.’ beneath the stamp remains uncertain but may refer to a military depot, supply unit or institution.
